The No-Kill Movement - Warehousing Dogs to Death

In writing about a recent case of several retail rescues selling off brucellosis infected dogs to members of the public in Texas and Virginia, one of them reminded me how I became what I am now, an American dog breeder and a published author.

Both careers can be traced back to a single dog named Snoopy. Let me tell you about him.  I saw Snoopy, a purebred Akita, for sale through a local animal rescue site over 20 years ago now.  As an experienced Akita owner and AKITA RESCUER, I felt I could give him a good home and applied to adopt him.  I thought it would be simple.  I never thought it would radically change my life.

My application entered me into hell in which I was interrogated by vegans, had my home thoroughly searched and my background plumbed before I could see him in person.  When I was finally cleared to visit a hidden property in Aldie, Virginia, I saw him warehoused in a small cage among over a hundred others and was covered from head to foot in urine.  He was sopping wet.  All of the white parts of his body were stained dark yellow from the urine. He was housed in such a small filthy kennel, he couldn't get away from his own waste.  I was crushed to see the living conditions he was being held in.  I apparently didn't have a good enough poker face at that point in my life because unknown to me after that visit, Snoopy was immediately moved to another hidden location.  I never saw him again.

"I got so big my owners didn't want me anymore."

Real truth?

Snoopy had a history of attacking other dogs and killed a cat.

25 years ago I worked in the animal rescue field. From the inside out, all I saw was fraud, waste and abuse. I saw streams of untraceable cash going straight into 'rescuers' pockets instead of to the animals. I saw more animal abuse on the part of rescuers than I saw animal owners committing. I saw people putting a halo on themselves and sitting on a pedestal. Completely untouchable as long as they claimed to be 'rescuers'.

I learned from what I saw with my own eyes that America does not have a 'overpopulation' problem, it has a retail rescue market problem. Let me introduce you to the straw that broke this camel's back and turned me against retail rescue forever.

It started with a dog named Snoopy as I said above.  Snoopy was living in a no-kill shelter, run by animal rights extremists (a mixture of vegetarians and vegans) warehoused in a cage for years.  The "rescue" had no clue how to handle him and his breed, they refused to LEARN about his breed, or how to correctly place him, but they “thought” they knew it all.  I could tell from my prior experience owning a hypothyroid affected Akita that Snoopy was also probably severely affected and needed medication. I told these clueless veg-idiots absolutely everything I knew about hypothyroidism in Akitas and referred them to Dr. Jean Dodd's of Hemopet who was studying hypothyroidism in the Akita breed.  FOHA didn't want to hear it.  Snoopy had also degenerated so much in the 3 years warehoused at FOHA that he had seizures and a liver infection.

Because of their attitude, he had already spent the majority of his life caged among hundreds of other dogs. This is the dark side of 'no kill' that the warm and fuzzies don't tell you.  Dogs are warehoused until they die.  It's not unicorns, love and kisses.  It is a terrible life sentence to these dogs.

At the time I didn’t know that the place that was housing Snoopy had a long history of criminal charges.  Snoopy taught me a hard lesson in life.

About this time I made friends through one of my writers organizations with a man who was the husband of a long time Standard Poodle breeder, Absolute Standard Poodles, and though him I met all their Standard Poodles and it was love at first sight!! Until this time in my life.... believe it or not, but I had NEVER met a Standard Poodle before!

I saw a cross roads in my life, with two radically different paths in front of me.  A path filled with abusive criminals calling themselves 'good' and a path filled with dog breeders called 'bad' but in reality INCREDIBLY GOOD.

I choose reality over myth.
I chose facts over heart warming fuzzies.

The bad guys in this story are Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA) of Aldie, Virginia.  (True legal name:  Friends of the Animal Shelter and Guardians of the Homeless Animals) What you will read here is NOT what you will see on their warm and fuzzy website. The true ugliness of the 'no-kill' movement and my first time going up against wacked out vegans.

Let me introduce you to some of the circle jerk that made up FOHA.
  • Anne P. Lewis - Founder and President - Convicted Criminal.
  • Sue Gilbert - Called herself "Acting" President and also behind "Companion Animal Rescue & Education (CARE) of Reston, Virginia  an outlet of FOHA - Convicted Criminal.
  • Riccado Wright - Owner of the FOHA property - Criminally Charged.
  • Judy Kraft - aka "Judy the Vegan Vegetarian," best buddies of Sue Gilbert, also behind "Companion Animal Rescue & Education (CARE) of Reston, Virginia an outlet of FOHA.
  • Katie Barr - Owner of one of FOHA's warehouses - Convicted Criminal.
Through the 1990's and until at least 2002, many of the major players of FOHA were criminally charged over and over again.  The Wrights and the conditions at the Aldie facility came to public light when they (and Anne Lewis of FOHA) were sued in 1991 over a vicious dog mauling.  The victim, a kennel employee, who was mauled by a dog named "Calgary" alleged in the lawsuit that he had a known vicious history with bites on record and she was not informed that he was dangerous.

They were raided and criminally charged in 1995 after investigation into another dog mauling in December 1994 led to the discovery of a number of emaciated dogs.

Their defense was a standard ploy, they just took in those 30 animals and 'someone else did it.'  Oh and of course their secondary backup excuse, they are operating on a 'shoe string' and have good intentions.

What I found to be the truth was that FOHA was secretly very wealthy with a large stock portfolio that had been donated to them.  They fought back with a vengeance and ultimately only Lewis was found guilty of two charges.

FOHA spun the situation as they were innocent rescuers trying to 'save' animals being framed by overzealous authorities.  The same defense their long time Fairfax County, Virginia outlet run by Katie Barr ran with.

In 1997, Riccardo Wright once again faced 21 charges of failing to provide water and clean kennels when the conditions continued.  Days before his trial, he committed suicide and FOHA purchased the Aldie property from his estate where it resides today with the same 1972 constructed buildings.

Besides 1995, Anne Lewis also fought charges in 1997 and 2000.  One of the 1997 charges was over FOHA selling a vicious dog to a woman in Fairfax and the dog bit her 3 times.  Loudoun Court Judge said, "Not Guilty." The dog bit the woman 3 times in a single week and Lewis got a free pass from lenient judges once again.

In April 2001, FOHA got into trouble for possessing stolen property when FOHA magically got custody of 2 'lost' Labrador retrievers and refused to return them to their legal owner.  The owner went the authorities and they forced FOHA to give up custody of the 2 dogs to their legal owner.

In 2001 and 2002, "Acting" President Sue Gilbert was found guilty of possessing vicious dogs after two additional dog maulings by FOHA dogs.  One of the dogs bit the victim in the face.

Unlike Wright and Lewis who mostly kept getting a free pass from local judges, authorities in neighboring Fairfax County spent almost two decades trying to shut down Katie Barr's house of horrors.

Barr was criminally charged several times over the years as locals tried to figure out how to stop her from abusing and warehousing animals.  This was back in the day in which extensive animal protection laws didn't exist but they do now thanks to Barr.  In 1980 her house of horrors burned down and 33 dogs died in the fire.  She immediately started back up again collecting dogs like Tupperware and being paid to house dogs by FOHA.

"Man, I wish you would clean up your kennel so that we wouldn't have to go through this."
Judge Robert M. Hurst, April 9, 1991.

There were a number of animal seizures on Barr's property starting in 1991 and several criminal trials after law enforcement seized 82 animals in 1993. Supplemental testimony includes numerous interesting statements such as the one dated June 4, 1986 that noted active rat burrows were in almost every dog enclosure and dog feces in some areas was as much as 5" deep. A memorandum from the Fairfax County Health Department dated July 1, 1987 noted that Barr had failed to clean up any of the debris from the kennel burning down 7 years earlier and simply built new make-shift enclosures (some made out of barbed wire) next to the burned remains and the entire property was in severe disrepair. Barr sued the zoning department in 1987 demanding the right to keep even more dogs than she was permitted to have, one of several suits over the years.

After years of letters back and forth between Barr, Zoning, the Health Department etc., all documenting the filth, the rats, the suffering dogs, the unsafe conditions that Barr refused to clean up, in 1991, county officials attempt to criminally charge Barr.

She managed to successfully get the warrant thrown out and the case dismissed twice.  She then tried to sue a number of the witnesses and failed.  She of course never cleaned up her kennel so in 1993 she was raided and charged again.

Court records reveal stories like the dog, "Brownie," whose coat was so matted to the skin and nails had not been trimmed in so long that when animal control saw him, his LEG WAS EMBEDDED IN HIS COAT and he could no longer stand.  He had taught himself how to walk on 3 legs in order to move around. Law enforcement stated that it looked like he had tried to scratch himself but his leg became entangled in his own matted fur and he could not free himself.  Barr never noticed. After his leg was cut free, he had to be retaught how to walk normally on 4 legs.

Another dog seized, a Labrador retriever named Rob, had such a massive untreated gum infection that his teeth were falling out into people's hands.  He had already lost his upper teeth before being seized.

An Australian Shepherd seized had to be humanely put down after he was found covered in his own urine and feces and was unable to move.  Additionally, he was suffering from an untreated severe skin disease SO BAD that he had maggots all around his genitals and in open wounds on his body.

Yet FOHA insisted everything was just fine and sued to try and get some of the dogs back.

Lawsuits flew over the years.  If local newspapers dared to print even the smallest bit of negative news about Barr, she'd sue them.  Barr loved suing people.  She even sued her investment broker when the value of her stock portfolio went down.  As a interesting side note, FOHA was sued for racial discrimination in 1988 for refusing to adopt a dog to a Nigerian couple solely because of their race.

Yet Barr never stopped warehousing and reselling 'rescued' dogs in horrific conditions with FOHA supporting and supplying her with dogs.

Maggots are extra good care?  Dogs that can't even walk are extra good care?   IF that's 'extra good' what's bad?

Time and time again Barr got nothing but a slap on the wrist when her house of horrors was investigated.  Even when Barr continuously threatened to shoot county officials she was not held accountable.  Here's the ruling in her 1993 trial after investigation was conducted into a vicious dog named "Dexter" that FOHA was warehousing on her land. Dexter was such a vicious dog with numerous bites on record that all of his teeth were ground down so far that the pulp and nerves was exposed.  It took two people and 'control sticks' to even enter his pen. Yet because these extremists believe so strongly in 'no kill' that Dexter was just warehoused until he could die 'naturally.'

She was finally found guilty and sentenced to 75 days in jail.  She just continued on as if nothing had happened.

After decades of running hell on earth, and non-stop battles with Zoning, the Health Department and Animal Control, Fairfax County finally got a judge to order Barr's kennel closed in 1998. Of course they had to go back to court repeatedly charging her with contempt of court because she still refused to shut down.  They also continued to seize dogs from her as they found them on the property.  Katie Barr finally sold her Centreville, Virginia property in 2002 for $625,000 and retired to Florida.

Back to Snoopy.  After being turned down to adopt him, I called Loudoun County Animal Control and filed a complaint.  They asked for full particulars of Snoopy, where he was caged, etc., and conducted an unannounced inspection.  Snoopy was NOT housed at the Aldie property. Shortly after I had seen the conditions there, FOHA moved him.  The story was worse than that.  An Akita-mix named Cody was listed by FOHA as being in their care but was also missing.  FOHA told animal control that they had two Akitas but both were in the hospital and had been for over a month suffering from seizures.  Neither of them matched the dog I had seen with my own eyes and why do all of the Akitas in FOHA's custody seem to suffer from seizures?  FOHA of course figured it out that I was the one that reported them to animal control and their supporters came after me HARD.

The more they threatened me, the more I investigated and reported them.
Even "Amy the Wiccan" (Sue Gilbert's daughter) threatened that I had better stop my investigation.  Fat Chance.  The threats from FOHA supporters continued for months until I filed a police report with the Fauquier County Sheriff's Department. A week later I got a letter in the mail from FOHA threatening to sue me for libel and defamation unless I shut up.

I consider it a Badge of Honor when crooks threaten to sue me.
Bring it on I say! 'Discovery' gonna be a real good time.

I have one last thing to say about Snoopy.  If you look at his two Petfinder Ads previously shown in this article, Snoopy CAME FROM TEXAS.  Even 20+ years ago, the Retail Rescue pipeline from Mexico to Texas and then shipment to the Northeast for resale was already active.  I have emails from that period showing that I questioned them as to whether Snoopy came from Texas and they never answered.

Another interesting side note to this story was my interview of animal rights extremist Hilleary Bogley in 2001.  I tried to interview as many people that would agree to talk to me that had interactions with FOHA over the years.  Bogley claimed to have done undercover investigations into FOHA several times.  She referred me to her buddies the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) for help.  They just sent me a propaganda package filled with PETA fact sheets and others.  Nine years later Bogley would attempt to destroy me

Ultimately I did not save Snoopy.  He disappeared and his fate is unknown, but I started writing about retail rescue and the horrors within it and 21 years later I'm still writing about it.  You can thank FOHA for all of that.

As for FOHA, they are still in business, still raking in the cash (over $2 million in assets while sitting on 20 tax exempt acres valued at $700,000+) and still getting in trouble for housing and reselling vicious dogs.  They currently have at least 1 dog registered with Virginia's Dangerous Dog Registry.

When Law Enforcement Cavorts with Criminals

I speak regularly of the fact that almost no one in law enforcement receives training on animals from animal experts. Instead the field of "animal law" is littered with con artists, quacks, sexual perverts and criminals.   Previously I discussed the National Sheriffs' Association here and the Virginia Animal Control Association here.  Also being led down the garden path is the National District Attorneys Association, which is just as bad as the American Prosecutors Association.

The National District Attorneys Association runs a "National Center for Prosecution of Animal Abuse" which offers many webinars on "animal abuse." Sounds good, right? Let’s look deeper.

In 2014 they offered the following Webinars:

Collaborative Animal Cruelty Investigations.

Presented by Joe Stafford (Director of Animal Law Enforcement) and Rod Novotny (Animal Law Enforcement Training Manager) with the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, Colorado

Grant Writing 101: Securing Funding for Animal Care.

Presenter: Adam Liebling (Director of Grants Compliance & Communication Grants Management, ASPCA)

"Feeding, housing, and caring for seized animals can be a costly necessity within an animal cruelty case. Learn how to find and be awarded grants to help defray these unexpected costs."

I wonder if he’s going to present on how the ASPCA and PETA asked a Florida judge for $1 million dollars for "animal care" that included bills for luxury hotel stays, catered lunches and "chocolates for the ladies."

Investigating and Prosecuting Juvenile Animal Abusers

Presenter: Jennifer Rallo (Assistant State’s Attorney with the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office)

"Research tells us that juveniles who enjoy harming animals are more likely to commit future acts of violence against humans. This webinar will provide an overview of the prosecution of the youthful offender and offer practical advice in how to best approach building your successful case against a youthful offender and how to achieve the best sentencing results."

Because as we all know, giving a juvenile a criminal record and sentencing them to prison time is really good for their "future."

Pretrial Motions – The Framework for Evidence at Trial

Presenter: Diane Balkin (Animal Legal Defense Fund, Criminal Justice Division Attorney)

Pretrial motions are an integral part of trial preparation. Court rulings regarding motions may dramatically affect the substance and procedure at trial. The prosecution of crimes against animals is still a relatively unexplored area. This webinar will discuss standard practice motions, such as motions for discovery and motions to suppress evidence and statements. Additionally, other motions such as “other/similar transactions” (Rule 404(b)) and Frye hearings (regarding expert testimony as to pain, suffering, etc.)

Understanding and Prosecuting Bestiality

Presenter: Jenny Edwards (The Chandler Edwards Group)

Bestiality is an emotional, even taboo topic, and can present moral, ethical, and legal challenges for the prosecutor. The sexual abuse of an animal by a human is considered a paraphernalia or sexual perversity, by the American Psychiatric Association, and is illegal throughout the United States and many foreign countries. Animal sex abuse can happen in any county or city, and occurs far more often than you might think.

I have covered Ms. Jenny Edwards before, when I talked about her lack of any credible experience in animals, let alone bestiality.

Keeping up the fun,
in 2013 they offered the following Webinars:

Behavioral Assessment and Rehabilitation of Animal Cruelty Victims

Presenter: Dr. Pamela Reid (ASPCA Behavioral Assessment Unit)

Dogs rescued from cruel conditions, including puppy mills, hoarding situations and dog fighting, run the gamut from friendly, sociable animals to extremely fearful—even feral—creatures.

Common Issues When Investigating and Prosecuting Animal Neglect Cases

Presenter: Geoff Fleck (Animal Legal Defense Fund, Criminal Justice Program)

This talk will address common issues that police and prosecutors confront when investigating and litigating animal neglect cases with an emphasis on three key procedural issues: (1) warrant writing; (2) pre-conviction tools to recover costs and get the animals out of the system ASAP; and (3) winning the merger of charges issues on the grounds that each animal qualifies as a separate victim.

Of course each animal is a separate victim!  If the animal owner had a tank of goldfish that's 10 extra victims to ramp up the charges against the poor luckless owner that went up against these loons.

The Dog in the Evidence Locker Problem: Managing Live Evidence in Animal Cruelty and Fighting Cases

Presenter: Stacy Wolf (Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel for ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement Division)

In an animal cruelty or animal fighting case, the arrest of the perpetrator is often just the beginning of a long road for the animal victims seized in the case. It may take many months, even years, before the criminal case is resolved. During that time, the animals must be housed, fed, and provided with veterinary care.

Note: They recommend "Voluntary written surrender" so that they can resell off the animals immediately.   That "voluntary" surrender is usually at the point of a gun.

Bloodstained Dirt: Cockfighting in the United States

Presenter: John Goodwin (Director of Animal Cruelty Policy, The Humane Society of the United States)

"What do public corruption cases targeting sheriff's departments in Tennessee and Virginia have in common with DEA investigations targeting drug cartels? What do large scale gambling facilities have to do with severe animal cruelty? The answer: cockfighting. While illegal in all 50 states, cockfighting thrives in the jurisdictions with weaker laws."

Seriously? John Goodwin?? The convicted criminal in five states?  The felon? The former member of the Animal Liberation Front, an FBI certified domestic terrorist group? John Goodwin who once stated: "We will never, ever, ever work with anyone who helps the FBI stop the A.L.F."

Investigating and Litigating Equine Neglect Cases

Presenters: Scott Heiser (Animal Legal Defense Fund, Criminal Justice Program) and Dr. Jennifer Cole (Equine Veterinarian)

"The investigation and prosecution of equine abuse/neglect cases commonly involve complex medical issues that are either missed by inexperienced investigators or mishandled by novice prosecutors. These types of errors create tremendous opportunities for the defense to undermine otherwise highly viable criminal cases."

I wonder if they will be mentioning the Henneke Body Scoring System?  And if so, will they be mentioning the little inconvenient fact that Dr. Henneke has publicly stated that prosecutors and law enforcement are misusing his system and it was NEVER designed to be used in animal cruelty cases?

Cases of Animal Abuse: The Role of the Forensic Veterinarian

Presenter: Dr. Rachel Touroo, DVM, Director of Veterinary Forensics, ASPCA Anti-Cruelty

Veterinary forensics is a recently emerging branch of veterinary medicine. Learn about the critical role veterinarians play in animal abuse cases.

You know from Ms. Touroo who has almost no hands-on experience with actual animals.

Blood “Sports”:

Investigating and Prosecuting Animal Fighting Cases

Presenter: Geoff Fleck (Criminal Justice Program Contract Attorney, Animal Legal Defense Fund)

Explore the horrific and clandestine world of animal fighting through the experienced eyes of a former prosecutor. Geoff Fleck will discuss specialized investigative techniques including effective warrant application and execution, the evidence to look for and seize, and trial strategies designed to insure a successful outcome in these often difficult cases.

Back in 2012 they offered the following Webinars:

Anticipating Defenses in Animal Abuse Prosecutions

Presenter: Diane Balkin, Contract Attorney with Animal Legal Defense Fund (retired Denver Deputy District Attorney)

Part of the prosecution strategy in any criminal trial is to anticipate the defense. There are certain defenses common to all types of crimes such as self-defense, identification, lack of intent, etc. Crimes against animals also involve more unique defense tactics and statutorily available defenses. It is critical for the prosecutor to carefully analyze his or her case to determine the strengths and weaknesses. The facts may be weak with strong witnesses or the reverse may be true. In this free, 60-minute webinar, Diane Balkin, a contract attorney for the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s Criminal Justice Program, will discuss the most common defenses in animal cruelty cases and how to prepare for them.

Combating Animal Cruelty: The Past, Present and Future

Presenter: Dr. Randall Lockwood, Senior Vice President of Forensic Sciences and Anti-Cruelty Projects, ASPCA

Review the history of efforts to fight animal abuse and neglect in America from the early days of animal protection to today.

Taught by a man who has made his career out of defining exactly what is a hoarder of animals and why.   Literally he made it up.  An entire category of crime made up by one man and taught to law enforcement nationwide as an 'expert witness.'

Planning for a Large Scale Seizure

Presenter: Joel Lopez, Sr. Manager of Operations, Field Investigations and Response, ASPCA

Responding to hoarding and other cases that involve large numbers of animals requires comprehensive planning.

Trial Strategies in Animal Cruelty Prosecutions

Presenter: Geoff Fleck, Esq., Animal Legal Defense Fund

This webinar will discuss specialized techniques for successfully prosecuting animal cruelty cases. Learn about jury selection, opening statements, presenting the state's case, cross-examining the defendant, and making an effective closing argument.

Common Issues Law Enforcement and Prosecutors Confront When Investigating and Litigating "Puppy Mill Cases"

Presenter: Scott Heiser, Esq., Animal Legal Defense Fund

This one hour talk by Animal Legal Defense Fund’s Scott Heiser will cover a host of factual and legal issues relevant to any puppy mill case, including:   an overview of the USDA’s regulatory impact on these types of cases.

Back in 2011 they offered the following Webinars:

The Veterinarian as an Expert Witness

Presenters: Diane Balkin, Animal Legal Defense Fund and Dr. Rob Reisman, ASPCA.

Veterinarians play a crucial role in identifying, reporting, and testifying in animal cruelty cases.

Nothing better than encouraging vets to turn on their patients and turn them into the police, right?  It turns out that Diane Balkin is an animal rights activist.

Prosecuting Animal Hoarding: Why, When and How

Presented by: Dr. Randall Lockwood, Senior Vice President of Forensic Sciences and Anti-Cruelty Projects at ASPCA

"Animal hoarding cases represent a significant proportion of animal abuse and severe neglect cases."

As you can see, the vast majority of training offered to District Attorney's is taught by perverts, quacks, self-professed experts and criminals.

Has the National Sheriffs’ Association embraced terrorism?

You’d think that an illustrious organization like the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) would be on the side of law and order but apparently not.  Recently an issue of "Deputy and Court Officer" published by the National Sheriffs' Association crossed my desk.  Focused on "animal crimes" the issue is chock full of nothing but ideology masquerading as science as Humane Watch recently put it so eloquently.

To start off with, the issue features a mind boggling nine mentions of the Animal Welfare Institute, to include two articles written by activists from this organization itself.  Are you kidding me?  The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) recently settled a RICO Act lawsuit brought against it and several other animal rights organizations by the Ringling Bros Circus.  This settlement came about when AWI and several other animal rights organizations lost a long standing animal abuse case against the Circus.  After almost a decade of litigation, the Judge ruled that the entire lawsuit alleging that Ringling Bros was committing elephant abuse was ""frivolous," "vexatious," and "groundless and unreasonable from its inception."" If AWI and their animal rights pals have been proven to lie about Ringling’s treatment of their elephants, just what makes the National Sheriffs' Association think they would tell the truth about any other case of animal cruelty?  In fact, Charity Navigator has issued a Donor Advisory against the Animal Welfare Institute as a result of their RICO Act settlement.

So what exactly is the NSA? It’s really a lobbyist organization for LEO’s nationwide. Now the NSA says on their website that part of their goals are to assist the "Sheriffs of this country" so that they can "provide quality service to their constituents." Those are noble goals indeed, especially since their constituents are their bosses. Never thought of it that way did you? The office of Sheriff is an elected position, directly elected by the voters of that county. Which means, the voters of that county are the supervisors of their Sheriffs, not the other way around. The NSA goes on to say, "All Sheriffs share the common goal of protecting the citizens that elected us, and making the quality of life of those citizens the best it can be." Really? If that is your goal then why are you lying down with ideological extremists whose only goals are to destroy the lives of your citizens?

But it gets better, the NSA is incorporated in Ohio and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Both Ohio and Virginia are animal rights terrorist strong holds.  In my recent book, The Art of Terror, I provided extensive information about the 2014 Association of Prosecuting Attorneys conference hosted by the Animal Legal Defense Fund,
an animal rights lawyers group, which featured such speakers on "animal cruelty" as discredited quack, Melinda Merck, the originator of the "Animal CSI" field.  Another speaker, John Goodwin, is a convicted criminal with a record in five states, oh, and, he was totally discredited in a Wisconsin court case revealing that he knows nothing about "animal fighting." John Goodwin is also famous as a former spokesman for the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), who once stated: "We will never, ever, ever work with anyone who helps the FBI stop the A.L.F."  For those that don't know... ALF is one of the most dangerous domestic terrorism threats in America today.

This trend of using ideological extremists, who know nothing about animals, to teach law enforcement officers is not new.  See this article I wrote last year on the education that Virginia’s Animal Control Officers receive on "animal law." Their instructors are quacks and criminals (who seem to love animal sex) just like the Prosecutors Conference.   Keeping the circle jerk cozy, John Thompson of the NSA also spoke at the national quack conference.

All of this reminds me of the old Dave Garcia story.  Dave Garcia is the guy who used to head up the Dallas SPCA and who trained some of the team on the TV show, Animal Cops.  He also used to train law enforcement officers on "animal cruelty" cases and what exactly constitutes cruelty in his fertile imagination.  Garcia was finally outed as the dirt bag he is on John Stossel's program on 20/20 back in 2005.  Turns out that 'expert' in animal cruelty was nothing of the kind.  What he really was is a convicted rapist.  He served three years in the slammer on a kidnapping and rape charge, then of course there were the multiple DUI's in various states.  You'd think that after that fiasco, that law enforcement officers would finally get a clue and ask actual animal experts for training.  But, I guess not.

Then there's the National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse "Advisory Board."  It too is staffed largely by ideological radicals with no credible animal experience.  Besides the Animal Legal Defense Fund, another position is filled by an HSUS Staffer and another by an ex-HSUS staffer.  Funny enough, HSUS is also a party to the RICO Act lawsuit mentioned earlier.   Humane Watch has just released an excellent new report on this mega-scam-a-thon organization:  Looting in the Aftermath.  I highly recommend reading it.

Literally in America today, the inmates are running the asylum. It’s no wonder that in an animal law case, the standard of law is now "guilty until proven innocent." With Animal Control officers, Sheriffs, and Prosecutors receiving their education from ideological extremists who have no experience in animals, it’s no wonder that American lives are being destroyed from coast to coast.

Respect has to be earned. When the NSA and law enforcement in general presents a slate of racketeers, criminals, and quacks as their experts, they receive no respect. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. You must watch what your local Sheriff is doing and demand transparency and accountability. If they show one ounce of interest in going along with these ideological extremists, throw them out of office.   The onus is on you.

A Streetcar Named Desire or Much Ado About Nothing?

When you think of Tennessee lots of things come to mind. Like playwright Tennessee Williams, though he wasn't actually from Tennessee. For me, I think of Tennessee Tea, a personal favorite of mine. Ever have it? It’s a brilliant story. Back in the 80's, Jack Daniel’s Distillery released a series of bottled cocktails called Tennessee Tea, Lynchburg Lemonade, and others that all use Jack as one of the ingredients. As is natural these days, a whiner came out of the woodwork and said, “Hey that’s my top secret recipe” and sued. Jack Daniel’s said, Fine. We withdraw our product, AND here’s the recipe. That’s right, Jack Daniel’s published the "top secret" recipe to both cocktails so everyone can make their own drinks and back into the woodwork crawled the whiner.  (The first Court awarded him One Dollar for his suit).  Now the recipe for making Tennessee Tea is available on dozens of websites on the Internet including the Jack Daniel's site.  Now that's a classy move.

The last thing probably on anyone’s mind when they think of Tennessee is animal rights. They’d be wrong.  There's more animal rights activism in Tennessee than bottles of Jack Daniels. Tennessee is literally a hot bed of animal rights terrorism.

Some of the major offenders include McKamey Animal Care and Adoption Center in Chattanooga, run by animal rights zealots with a 50% kill rate, a high "accidental" kill rate (oops' sorry we killed your dog....), and who love to illegally raid dog breeders and pet stores.  Then there's Memphis, regularly blogged by YesBiscuit over the brutality and animal cruelty that happens regularly in the Animal Shelter.  Yes, the Memphis Animal Shelter is a hell hole.  Memphis Animal Services (MAS) is also notorious for running SWAT Team raids on animal owners and seizing their pets away from them, which only adds to their high kill rate. Both human and animal.  The deaths of Donald Moore and Tommie Morgan can also be placed at the doorstep of MAS.  Which is highly ironic given the fact that MAS has itself been raided over the horrific cruelty that exists in their shelter.  To date at least a dozen MAS employees have been charged with animal cruelty yet conditions never seem to improve and they continue to illegally raid animal owners.  Then you have Tennessee State Representative William Lamberth, an animal rights lawyer, member of the radical vegan Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) out of California, and who rose to power by prosecuting elderly animal owners and destroying their lives.  What a nice guy.  You'd never know about his ALDF history from his campaign website which talks about God, Country, Limited Government, Low Taxes, Farmers, and Family.  Is there any other buttons he forgot to push?  You know what they say about politicians... if their lips are moving.   With the blazing trails of dead animals following in the wake animal rights activists in Tennessee you'd think they'd learn to be more circumspect.  Nah!  Their arrogance knows no bounds.

It should then surprise no one that they took on and raided the Wheelon Stables, owned by Larry Wheelon a long time respected trainer and AAA rated Judge who was an active director of the Tennessee Walking Horse Trainer’s Association and served on their ethics committee. This raid was part of HSUS's larger effort to destroy the Tennessee Walking Horse industry and their National Celebration show which the HSUS has campaigned against calling it the "Cruelest Show on Earth."  They thought they had another Jackie McConnell situation to exploit for all it was worth.  They were wrong.

In April of 2013, the HSUS and local activists from Horse Haven of Tennessee raided the Wheelon Stables "with the Blount County Sheriff's Office assisting in serving the warrant" and accused trainer Larry Wheelon of animal cruelty claiming he had been illegally “soring” the horses. Something tells me that the Blount County Sheriff's Office needs a course in the United States Constitution. Animal rights activists such as the HSUS have no legal authority to serve a search warrant. Zippo, nada, none. Additionally, the raid was headed by USDA Special Agent Julie McMillan of Nashville another person with no legal authority to lead a raid. HSUS of course immediately released one of their highly scripted press releases claiming massive horse abuse with horses in "extreme pain" on the part of Mr. Wheelon. The search warrant, like so many other animal cases, authorized a search of Mr. Wheelon's stables but did not authorize the seizure of any animals. They were taken anyway. Not only were 19 horses seized, but a dog, cash, and property were also stolen as well.

As you can expect, the activists knowing nothing of true and correct animal care, placed 3 stallions together during the transport run. Surprising no one, one stallion attacked another causing a serious body injury. The activists were warned repeatedly to get the horse emergency veterinary help but they ignored the instructions. When the seized horses were finally examined by multiple veterinarians, all of them were found to be in excellent condition except the injured stallion that was injured due to the ignorant handling by the activists not Mr. Wheelon.

The Case Fell Apart:

When it came time to prove their case in court, they had none.  In a courtroom packed with Mr. Wheelon's supporters, the judge dismissed the charges of aggravated animal cruelty against Mr. Wheelon saying there was no probable cause to continue the case.

After the case was dismissed, Larry Wheelon spoke out about his ordeal. He said, "We love this industry and these horse(s) and we're not going to do nothing to abuse this horse," Wheelon said Tuesday. "You got $50,000 and you're going to go out and abuse it? I don't think so." While the case is over, legally speaking, Wheelon said he still is facing a court of public opinion. "I've told all my owners I was sorry this was happening, and I hate what they're going through. I've got some customers that have been with me since 1965," said Wheelon."

But the case is not over, The animal animals movement is determined to not take this defeat laying down. Even though a District Court Judge dismissed the charges against Mr. Wheelon saying there simply wasn't enough real evidence to go on, animal rights activists are pressing hard to force the District Attorney to attempt to continue prosecuting Mr. Wheelon in Circuit Court. The activists made a big deal out of prosecution witness USDA Dr. Bart Sutherland not being allowed to testify due to a technicality but what they won't tell you is that USDA horse inspectors have already been outed during a FOIA request as admitting in government emails that they know nothing about horses and some of them actually hate horses.

On August 20, the Judge ordered, “the 19 horses being held in this case by the state of Tennessee and in the custody of the HSUS be returned immediately to the owners.” But the horses aren't in Tennessee. HSUS shipped them out of state immediately after the raid to Texas. Not only that, but court records claim that USDA agent Julie McMillan gave two of the horses to her ex-husband. Each of their owners will now have to battle to attempt to get their horses back from this combination of out of control animal rights activists and ignorant and overreaching bureaucrats looking to pad their prosecution resume.

It should also come as no surprise that HSUS has put a $5,000 bounty on owners or trainers of Walking Horses, just has they have for dog breeders.  So what you are asking yourself, does this have to do with a Streetcar named Desire? Turns out it was all Much Ado About Nothing.
